Laser eye surgery is low risk, but not risk free. Like all surgical procedures, there is always a risk. Eye surgeons try to minimize the risk by carefully screening potential candidates with extensive medical questionnaires, people who have difficulty healing or very strong prescriptions may not be good candidates for laser eye surgery.

Laser eye surgery has a high success rate, the majority of people who have the surgery done now have 20/20 vision. Only about about one patient out of two thousand who underwent laser eye surgery, suffers from worse vision than before the surgery. Dry eyes seems to be the most common side effect of successful procedures but people who are living their lives without glasses or contacts say the dry eyes are a small price to pay for better vision.

When consulting with an eye surgeon about having an surgery to correct your vision, keep in mind that you only have one set of eyes. It’s so tempting to say yes right away, after all, it’s a quick surgery done in about an hour. You could be seeing clearly in 24-48 hours. Don’t minimize the risks though. When a problem does occur, it is usually devastating. Make sure the eye surgeon you select has the training and experience to deal with any complications that could occur during the procedure.
